Eastern region police launches ant vandalism campaign

Police in eastern region has called on communities and different stakeholders to join hands in an effort to safeguard government’s property from vandalism which has come at alarming state in the region.

The call was made during the launch of anti-vandalism campaign in Liwonde Township, Machinga district.

Speaking during the launch, Deputy Commissioner of Police in eastern region Kelvin Mulezo said the region is registering high cases of vandalism hence the need to bring sanity and control in relation to vandalism.

Mulezo mentioned Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), Southern Region Water Board (SRWB) and Central East African Railway (CEAR) as major victims of the malpractice which is caused by unscrupulous business people.

He however mentioned Scrap metal business as a crucial component in fighting vandalism hence urged the operators to avoid engaging shady deals.

Chairperson for Second hand and metal dealers association Patrick Jonathan faulted government on its delay to register people who operate scrap metal business saying it’s one of the contributing factors leading to vandalism in the country.

Meanwhile, Machinga District Commissioner Lucia Chidalengwa said the district has not been spared from the malpractice as it has come as one of the hotspots of vandalism.

Senior chief Sitola welcomed the campaign to his area and urged the public to play their part in curbing vandalism.

The launch will also take place in other hotspot districts of Golomoti in Dedza, Mulanje, Tholo and Phalombe.
