Chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission MEC has announced that there are 20 registered political parties in the country
Justice Anabel Mtalimanja disclosed during a meeting with secretary generals and directors of elections of registered political parties regarding voter transfers
Mtalimanja said the commission will only allow political parties that have been duly registered and issued with a political party registration certificate by registrar of political parties to participate in the electoral process
Mtalimanja says the commission will not involve itself in any registration dispute between a political party and the registrar of political parties
She has highlighted that there was a total of 14, 173 duplicate records which have been flagged with the system
On closure and non-opening of certain voter registration centres the MEC boss says the commission planned to open 6339 centres across 509 wards and 229 constituencies
However she said it was discovered that some centres were omitted in the Elections Management system while others were incorrectly assigned to different wards or districts
The commission resolved not to reintroduce or open any additional centres but to make arrangements for those that would have been affected by the omission
Some centres did not open or actually closed on request and recommendation by local electoral stakeholders
A list of the centres that were not opened closed after a few days of operation or relocated due to occupational health and safety concerns and recommendation by local stakeholders will be published separately with clear explanations
Mtalimanja says has reiterated that 7, 200, 905 people registered as voters for 2025 general elections against the projected figure of 10, 957,490 of National statistics office
