Malawi receives first Consignment of Maize from Tanzania
Malawi has received first consignment of 47,000 metric tons of maize, government has purchased from Tanzania.
The maize is expected to be distributed to approximately three million people across 15 districts
Speaking at World Food Program (WFP) warehouse in Blantyre, Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, described the dispatch as a beacon of hope and dignity for families affected by hunger in the country.
Kawale said government is committed to meet immediate needs and build a sustainable food secure nation.
But speaking to the media after the event, Minister of Information and Digitalization Moses Kumkuyu, said the initiative is clear manifestation of President Chakwera’s agenda of ensuring that no Malawian has died of hunger.
Kumkuyu however condemned the tendency of some beneficiaries who are abusing governments programs of averting hunger in the country.
In his remarks, WFP Interim Country Director, Simon Denhere, said the organisation has partnered with government to provide food to most affected households throughout the country.
Denhere said is optimistic that by mid-April the whole tonnage of the purchased maize will be in the country.
Malawi government has procured the maize with financial support from World Bank through Agriculture Commercialization Program (AGCOM) and Resilience Climate Response Program (RCRP).
