Teachers’ stay away strike over covid-19 risk allowances resumes

Teachers Union of Malawi TUM has stressed that they will not go back to work until their grievances are addressed.

TUM President Willy Malimba, was speaking as teachers in government schools have resumed the stay away strike today.

The stay away strike has resumed a few weeks after government through parliamentary committee on education intervened in the disagreement between teachers and government over COVID 19 allowances.

When calling off the strike, government had indicated that it will offer hard cash payments to teachers for their personal protective equipment.

However, the presidential task-force on COVID 19 said it cannot give the teachers the money as it was not relevant this time.

Malimba says “we are meanwhile waiting for government reaction on the matter adding they have currently been summoned to a meeting by Civil Servants Trade Union CSTU.”
