Police arrest teachers over demonstrations
Police in Lilongwe has arrested 8 teachers during demonstrations which were organized by Concerned Teachers of Malawi.
Confirming the development in an interview with radio Islam, secretary general for concerned teachers of Malawi Aziz Losa said police have also fired tear gas to disperse teachers who gathered to deliver a petition to the district commissioner in Blantyre. k
Losa said teachers in the two cities were dispensed for their failure to seek permission to hold the demonstrations which are aimed at forcing government to address their concerns among them risk allowances.
Losa however added that demonstrations have peacefully taken place in Mulanje, Thyolo, Kasungu and Salima districts.
“The demonstrations failed to take place in Mangochi due to the interference of the Teachers Union of Malawi TUM,” Losa
Commenting to the development TUM President Willie Malimba whilst distancing itself from the demonstrations, said the concerns raised by the teachers are genuine.
National police spokesperson James Kadadzera referred us to Southern region police spokesperson Ramsey Mushani who asked for more time to gather information.
