Parliamentary Committee criticizes ESCOM for increasing electricity tariffs
Parliamentary Committee on natural resources has criticized Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) for effecting electricity tariffs without Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority MERA’s approval.
This comes after MERA had announced the electricity tariff increase effective 30th March.
Speaking after a meeting with both MERA and ESCOM officials at parliament building in Lilongwe today, the committee’s chairperson Welani Chilenga said MERA had announced the tariffs with the aim of bailing out ESCOM out of its financial huddles which date back to 2015.
According to Chilenga “the announcement was made to make Malawians pay for the debts which the electricity company has which he said is uncalled for.”
He says they have sent back the two to iron out the issue and come back before the committee in a week’s time.
MERA announced that it had increased the electricity tarriff because the Malawi kwacha had depreciated against foreign currencies
