Parliament passes Energy amendment bills
Parliament has passed two energy bills namely the Bill Number 28 of 2024, Energy Regulation amendment and bill number 29 of the liquid oil and gas production and supply amendment.
The Bills seek to address energy challenges which Malawi is facing
The Energy Regulation bill proposes a number of amendments, including introduction of a new definition of the word licence and to reconstitute membership of Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority MERA.
But DPP spokesperson on the Bill Bright Msaka trashed the legislation describing it as an application for a license to steal from Malawians through misprocurement of fuel.
UDF Spokesperson Esther Jolobala said the bill paves way for abuse of MAREP levy.
But leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda faulted Msaka for commenting on a wrong bill.
Speaking earlier, Chimwendo Banda, alleged that people who were booing President Lazarus Chakwera in Lilongwe’s area of Chinsapo were hired by opposition political parties.
Banda was responding to member parliament of parliament for Mulanje Bale, Victor Musowa, who said it is unfortunate that Chakwera who was his best friend when he was Member of Parliament was booed
