Parliament passes emergency power restoration bill
Parliament has passed the emergency power restoration project loan authorization bill
The bill was presented in the national assembly by minister of finance and Economic Development Sosten Gwengwe
Gwengwe said the bill will help government to borrow funds from International Development Association IDA for the restoration of Kapichira hydro power dam that was damaged by cyclone Ana
“You may recall that in January 2022 Malawi lost 129 megawatts of power due to the cyclone which devastated the country hence the persistent blackouts,” Gwengwe
Both DPP and UDF spokespersons Werani Chilenga and Esther Jolobala respectively supported the bill saying it’s very significant in the provision of energy to Malawians
However Chilenga and Jolobala asked government to use the money effectively to achieve the intended purpose
Experts from World Bank are in the country for preparatory works for the rehabilitation of Kapichira
Last week, EGENCO said power supply will be restored at Kapichira Power Station by the end of December
