NFRA buys over 1,000 metric tons of maize from farmers

National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) Board Chairperson Dennis Kalekeni says they have bought over 1,000 metric tons of maize, two weeks after commencing the maize procurement exercise.

Speaking during a press briefing at NFRA silos in Lilongwe Kalekeni, said the Maize has been bought from central and Southern regions.

Kalekeni said they haven’t purchased Maize in northern region because usually farmers there harvest later than other regions

“NFRA is targeting to buy 11,000 Metric tons using the K6 billion government allocated to the Agency,” says Kalekeni

Kalekeni adds that if they get the whole K12 billion which was allocated in National Budget for Maize purchase, NFRA plans to buy 22,000 metric tons.

He further said are buying the maize at K550 per kilogram citing high moisture content as a major problem facing the exercise
