MWASIP Engages Communities on Land Laws

Communities from Senior Chief Kunthembwe in Blantyre district say the introduction of new land laws will reduce land disputes in the area.

Communities made the remarks alongside one day training on land registration laws organized by the Malawi Watershed Services Improvement Project (MWASIP).

Speaking during the official opening of the training, Senior Chief Kuthembwe, held MWASIP for the initiative, saying the training will raise awareness on the new land laws and address issues of land disputes in his area.

Senior Chief Kunthembwe said apart from instilling the land ownership to the communities, the project is also to restoring the degraded land and improving agricultural practices across his subjects.

On his part, Deputy Commissioner for Lands responsible for land registration in the Ministry of Lands Anthony Nzima, disclosed that over 60,000 customary land parcels have successfully been adjudicated and demarcated in Traditional Authorities Mkula and Mlumbe of Machinga and Zomba districts.

Nzima said the training was organized in preparation for the next phase in which 25,000 customary land certificates are expected to be issued in Senior Chief Kunthembwe’s area.

Nzima said the exercise will further empower communities with legal titles to their land and strengthen land tenure security and supporting community-level land management.
