Hunger Strikes People in Makanjira
Takaaful Corporation society has asked well wishers to reach out to hunger stricken families of TA Makanjira in Mangochi district.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Islam, Takaaful Executive director, Adil Chilungo, said the current situation in the area is very pathetic .
“We visited the area on Saturday 3 November, 2018 where we saw people surviving on mangoes,” Chilungo said
The situation in Makanjira follows a low harvest in the 2017-18 farming season, fall army worms and dry spells.
According to 2018 Malawi Vulnerability Report {MVAC} 3.3 million will be food insecure this year following a 28.4 percent decrease in maize production.
In September, Government of Malawi, through Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), launched a once-off maize distribution exercise targeting acute food-insecure households in 26 districts of the country.
According to government a total of 432,729 bags of maize [21,636.5 tonnes] will be distributed to 432,729 food-insecure households in those districts.
The relief maize is being distributed to households in Blantyre, Neno, Chiradzulu, Mulanje, Thyolo, Phalombe, Mwanza, Machinga, Mangochi, Balaka, Zomba, Chikwawa, Nsanje, Karonga, Mzimba, Rumphi, Chitipa, Dowa, Mchinji, Kasungu, Ntchisi, Dedza, Ntcheu, Lilongwe, Nkhotakota and Salima.
