HRDC challenges government to serve interest of Malawians

Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC has challenged government to serve the interest of Malawians.

At a press briefing in Lilongwe HRDC chairperson Gift Trapence said the administration of Tonse led government has been a mixed bag

Trapence said government has failed to fulfill most of its promises though people voted for it to change and improve their lives

“Government should reverse the decision to increase fuel prices saying the hike has come at a wrong time when Malawians are having financial problems because of covid-19,” Trapence

He has since asked government to discuss with Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority the reduction of fuel prices

The HRDC chairperson said Tonse government is betraying Malawians as it is failing to fulfill most of the promises it made during campaign

In his remarks HRDC member Mcdonald Sembereka advised president Chakwera to stop unnecessary visits and taking a lot of people because it is abuse of taxpayers’ money

Sembereka said “government should review the issue of hiking salaries for members of parliament and allocate the money to sectors that will help Malawians.”

Responding on fuel price increase Minister of information Gospel Kazako said the hike depends on costs at international markets adding the increment is not huge as compared to last year’s hike

He said it is unfair for minibus drivers and shops to increase fair and prices of products
