Climate smart works program beneficiaries shut Machinga district council over wages
Hundreds of climate smart works program beneficiaries have shut down Machinga district council offices over nonpayment of their two months wages
The beneficiaries who flocked at the council early morning on Monday are chanting songs demanding authorities to explain whereabouts of their money saying beneficiaries from other districts have received their money
This has brought commotion at the district council as no officer is allowed to discharge their duty
According to information over 5000 beneficiaries across the district from ten traditional authorities have not been paid their January and February wages amounting to 28,800 each
Speaking to Radio Islam the protesters’ representative Macdonald Makanjira faulted the council over the delay saying the communities are facing challenges due to nonpayment of their wages
According to Makanjira most of the beneficiaries are at risk of hunger as their crops were washed away by floods
Commenting on the matter Chinguni ward councilor Davies Weja has asked government to address the matter immediately as his people are in dire need of basic needs
Meanwhile Machinga district council authorities are yet to comment on the matter
Beneficiaries of the climate smart public works program worked for 12 days in January and February respectively
