Chiefs & MPs demand reversal of population census recruitment
Traditional leaders and Members of parliament in Mangochi district have asked office of district commissioner to reverse the process of recruiting enumerators in Malawi housing and population census saying people in Mangochi were not recruited.
Speaking during a full council meeting on Thursday Sultan Chowe said chiefs who are asked to promote education must also be involved in the recruitment process.
He said chiefs know brilliant children in their villages who can effectively work in the housing and population census among other projects.
“It is worrisome that eligible children were not recruited but officials recruited their relatives from other districts,” bemoaned Sultan Chowe
MP for Mangochi Mkungulu Aisha Mambo Adams concurred with Sultan Chowe saying many children from the district have been left out though they meet requirements.
“This has tarnished our image as people think that we were nvolved in the malpractice,” Adams lamented.
Therefore she said the recruitment process must restart in Mangochi for people who are jobless in the district to do the census.
Reacting to the concerns Mangochi district commissioner Mosses Chimphepo commended the chiefs and MPs for the feedback.
Chimphepo said he will wait for reports from officials who are conducting the recruitment process in the fields.
“The process might face some hiccups in some centres as some who failed were going to attend interviews in other centres,” Chimphepo said
He said the concerns will be addressed after analyzing the report.
