Malawi to have English-Chichewa medical dictionary

Malawi is for the first time in history expected to have in place an English-Chichewa medical dictionary.

The project, which is now in the final phase of development, has been spearheaded by a science research based institution, Malawi Liverpool welcome program MLW.

In an interview with Radio Islam Funny Kapakaso senior translation and transcription coordinator at MLW the project was initiated after noting a gap in the translation of the medical vocabulary.

Kapakaso says the 2000 words dictionary has been developed in coordination with various stakeholders including ministry of health.

She says so far the dictionary has already been printed and awaits its launch early next year.

Reacting to the news Ministry of health public relations officer Adrian Chikumbe has applauded MLW for the initiative which he said will ease communication gap between health workers and clients.

Chikumbe said efforts have been there to develop such a dictionary with other partners but did not materialize.

A media practitioner Chriss Mainjeni and Janet Kamasho, a citizen have also joined the ministry in commending MLW for the development.

According to Mainjeni translating medical words to Chichewa for the masses to easily understand, has always been an issue therefore the book will assist media personnel to rely correct information

However, Kamasho has called for public sensitization of upcoming book.
