Concerned Citizens write World Leaders on Malawi Democracy Deterioration
Concerned Malawians in the diaspora and in the country have written a letter to world leaders and international Organisations appealing to address the deteriorating state of governance and democracy in Malawi.
In a letter the concerned Malawians say corruption, fraud and misprocurement under President Chakwera’s administration have become endemic, with significant scandals going unpunished such as Zuneth Sattar Case, Fertilizer Scandal, dubious contracts, fuel bribery, compromised judiciary, food shortages, rising costs of living, executive overreach, and suppression of dissent have worsened living conditions and limited freedoms.
Signed by Kondwani Munthali Coordinator of International Response and Louis Nkhata Coordinator of Malawi Response the letter says despite this crisis, government has offered no substantial relief, leaving vulnerable populations to resort to desperate measures like consuming wild plants.
According to the concerned Malawians in the diaspora and within the country such failures demand urgent attention to prevent further chaos.
On 2025 Presidential Elections they have cited concerns over Malawi Electoral Commission’s impartiality, potential manipulation of voting systems and National Registration Bureau deliberately making it difficult for Malawians to register despite a court order
They have expressed concern on police and government’s silence on those incidents which are alarming
Therefore the concerned Malawians say international community’s support is critical to ensure free, fair, and credible elections considering the violence against opposition protesters
