Fire Destroys Hundreds of Fertilizer Bags

Many bags of fertilizer belonging to Malawi Fertilizer Company have been destroyed after a 15 ton truck caught fire outside Liwonde fertilizer terminal in Machinga.

According to Liwonde Police Officer in-charge, Ulemu Kalua, the truck was parked next to a 30 ton truck which caught fire first before spreading to the loaded truck.

He said the truck had 400 bags of fertilizer loaded but no injuries have been recorded as the drivers got out quickly.

One of the eye witnesses who is also a truck driver, Justice Rich believes the fire could have been avoided from spreading to another vehicle but pointed out lack of fire extinguisher as a major factor.
