MRA introduces taxes on cars, worries importers

Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has said introduction of specific taxes on used motor vehicles is going to create a conducive environment to importers.

The remarks come barely few days after Ministry of Finance published a gazette on customs duty for importation of vehicles.

Speaking at a media briefing organized to clarify the matter, MRA’s Deputy Commissioner responsible for Facilitation, Chimwemwe Kawalewale, said the new system will enable the importers to know the amount of money to pay before the transactions.

Kawalewale said the system will also reduce incidences of corruption and promote fairness.

He however dispelled the concerns that the new system is depriving more people who venture into the importation used vehicle businesses.
