Catchment conservation and management campaign launched
Machinga district council has expressed satisfaction with catchment conservation and management campaign to address land degradation and climate change.
According to Machinga district council Chairperson, Richard Matenje farmers have shown commitment in implementing the initiative.
He was speaking in the area of Senior Chief Nyambi when the district launched a catchment conservation and management campaign under the theme: “Integrated catchment management for improved food security and climate change.
According to Matenje, farmers Machinga have been experiencing low yields due to land degradation which is fueled by traditional means of farming and deforestation.
Paramount Chief Kawinga of Yao people urged his counterparts to mobilise their subjects to play an active role in the newly launched Adaptation Fund Project which will improve crop production.
On his part, National Coordinator for Adaptation Fund in Ministry of Agriculture, Gylbert Kupunda advised councils to involve masses of famers into the program while noting slow adaptation of modern farming technologies as a major challenge affecting conservation of degraded areas.
