VIHEMA appeals for Media awareness on deaf-blindness
Visual Hearing Impairment Membership Association (VIHEMA) has asked media houses to raise more awareness on the existence of deaf-blind disabilities
President for VIHEMA Deaf-Blind Malawi Ezekiel Kumwenda made the call as the organization is commemorating International deaf-blind day today
He said their focus in this year’s commemoration is on intersection of old aged and deaf blindness by shedding more light on unique challenges faced by individuals who are both deaf blind and elderly
Kumwenda said VIHEMA is trying to advocate needs and rights of people who are hearing and visually impaired
The president further said they are also working together with Chisombezi deaf blind center, a specialized education center that provides support to individuals with deaf-blindness in the country
The theme for this year’s deaf blind commemoration is “Old age and deaf blindness” which is highlighting the increased number of individuals who experience dual sensory loss when aging
