Over 105,000 households receive funds in urban cash transfer program

Ministry of economic planning and development says it has reached out to more than 105,000 households with urban cash transfer program.

In an interview with radio Islam when it wanted to find out the progress of the work,  public relations officer for the ministry Allan Jere said 42 148 households have received three months while 63,624 for two months.

Jere said they will pay the remaining batch by the end April but 93,641 households are yet to verify the Know Your Customer KYC as required by Reserve Bank of Malawi and has since been extended to end April.

“Lack of phone numbers and expiry of national Identity Cards are some of the major challenges facing the program,” Jere

Meanwhile he said government is in the process of verifying the said households and will make the transfers in May.

The covid-19 response program to cushion livelihood of the urban poor and those depending their livelihood on vulnerable employment, targets 199,413 beneficiaries in 4 cities of Blantyre, Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Zomba with support from the World Bank, GIZ, UNICEF, EU and International Labor Organization.
