Court grants permission to MEC commissioners for judicial review of appointments rescission
High court has granted permission to two commissioners of Malawi Electoral Commission Dr Jean Mathanga and Linda Kunje for judicial review and stay order on rescission of their appointment
According to Registrar of the courts Mathanga and Kunje applied against secretary to president and cabinet zangazanga chikhosi and President Dr Lazarus Chakwera after they rescinded their appointment
High court says the permission has been granted upon reading statement verified by sworn statement of Kunje and hearing her counsel
“The application for judicial review be made to a judge in open court and that the hearing be heard promptly,” High court registrar
Zangazanga said the appointment of Mathanga and Kunje was rescinded because Public appointments committee of parliament found them incompetent
Thereafter attorney general Chikosa Silungwe advised Malawi electoral commission MEC to stop its activities because of the rescission of the appointments of the two commissioners
As a result MEC announced that it had halted its operations including the meetings with political parties’ leaders on demarcation of constituencies and wards which were underway
