Fistula Malawi Programme estimates that 20000 women have fistula in Malawi

Board chairperson of the program Dr. Grace Chiudzu has disclosed during the commemoration of international fistula day in Nkhotakota district

Dr Chiudzu said from Nkhotakota district, a total of 27 women with the condition has been repaired at Bwaila Fistula Center in Lilongwe this year.

She says currently, 10 percent of fistula cases that are being recorded are of women who undergo operation during childbirth, this shows that some medical experts fail to assist pregnant women in labour.

The day is being commemorated under the theme:  breaking the cycle: preventing fistula worldwide and guest of honour is the first lady Madam Monica Chakwera

The theme emphasizes the critical importance of preventing fistula by addressing gaps in healthcare and society that lead to prolonged obstructed labour.
