Unscrupulous people dupe Malawians with relatives in UK
Unscrupulous people are duping people in the country that their relatives living in UK have sent a parcel through Kamuzu or Chileka international airports and should send money to clear it.
According to public relations officer for airport police sub inspector Sapulain Chitonde Lee of late Kamuzu international airport police has been receiving calls from victims across the country complaining that they have been duped.
Lee says the conmen are using local mobile lines to make contacts with unsuspecting individuals.
“The crooks date their unsuspecting victims through a friend request on Facebook until they win their trust over, and women are falling victims of this scam,” says Lee
Later the scammers tell their innocent victims that they have sent them a parcel which contains assorted items and even some US dollars.
Then the victims are contacted by phone purported to be a clearing agent at the Airport demanding money through Mpamba or Airtel money as a clearing fee.
“The texts bear British numbers and the most used agent name is DELTA COURIER SERVICE which is not at Malawi Airports,” adds Lee
Therefore, Kamuzu International Airport police strongly warns Face book users to be extra cautious.
