SUGAM) petitions Government on Sugar Industry Bill enactment

Sugarcane Growers Association of Malawi (SUGAM) has presented a petition to government through district councils to expedite enactment of Sugar Industry Bill.

President of SUGAM Robert Dziweni is optimistic that the bill will improve welfare of sugarcane growers by involving them in critical decision-making processes, ultimately contributing to a more transparent sugar industry, including fair pricing mechanisms.

Dziweni noted that, in the absence of legal regulatory framework they have been pushing for 10 years now, millers deduct 40 percent of division of proceeds, which is exorbitant compared to other SADC countries.
