Police Raid Villages Over Witchcraft

Police has raided two villages in Dedza for onslaught and witchcraft accusations.

According to deputy publicist for Dedza police Cassim Manda armed police officers on 24th January arrested 6 people who attempted to kill a woman and her two children who were being accused of practicing witchcraft.

Manda said on 10th January this year a standard two learner at Chiphanzi village died after a short illness.

“On 12th January a day after burial Dedza police was tipped that a group of criminals had gathered and apprehended the juveniles accusing them of bewitching the deceased,” Manda said

Police officers rushed to the scene to rescue the family and when they arrived angry people started throwing stones at them.

The mother who was severely injured was admitted at Dedza district hospital.

Last year, some of the suspects also allegedly killed an elderly for the same accusations.

Meanwhile, Dedza police has cautioned the general public to stop the tendency of accusing someone of practicing witchcraft.
