Police Inquiry team submits report on Msundwe violence to IG

Malawi Police Service says the inquiry report on the Msundwe violence has been submitted to Acting Inspector General IG Duncan Mwapasa.

Deputy Inspector General John Nyondo who led the internal inquiry said during a press briefing in Lilongwe that the findings will not be shared to the general public.

According to Nyondo, criminal investigations into the rapes started on 31st December and six detectives – three males and three females – were given 14 days to complete the probe.

Nyondo said they cannot reveal the suspected police officers who are involved in the matter since it will jeopardize further investigations.

He told the press that police will not shield any officer who raped the women.

Nyondo dismissed reports that the six detectives who conducted the investigation harassed and intimidated the victims.

He said there is need for cooperation and support among investigators, witnesses and the victims.

In his remarks executive secretary for Malawi Human Rights Commission David Nungu said if police does not handle the matter with justice leagl action will be taken.

Nungu then advised the victims to cooperate with the investigators so that the investigations can be conducted fast.
