Person With Albinism Killed On 1 January
Association of persons with albinism APAM has condemned the murder of person with albinism on 1st January, 2019 in Nkhatabay district.
In a press statement APAM president Overstone Kondowe said the gruesome murder of Yasin Phiri 54 represents a massive setback to progress achieved since 2018.
Kondowe urged authorities to do everything within their power to bring the perpetrators of this barbaric act to justice.
He called for necessary measures for enhancing safety of persons with albinism in the country.
“It is unfortunate that Malawians with albinism are among the most marginalized and vulnerable of citizens yet very little attention continues to be given to protecting them from human rights violations, threats and violent crime,” said Kondowe
He called on stakeholders to redouble their efforts in implementing the national action plan.
Kondowe said it is disheartening that the majority of crimes on attacks of people with albinism remain unresolved due to lack of government resource prioritization.
He has therefore encouraged authorities to ensure thorough, prompt and impartial investigation on all cases on attacks of people with albinism and bring perpetrators to justice.
