Parliament orders ESCOM to replant trees
Parliamentary committee on natural resources has taken ESCOM to task by ordering it to replant the trees it cut down which the lawmakers planted in Mtandire in 2015.
This has been put to light when the committee engaged ESCOM on the matter where it demanded compensation from the cooperation.
The committee which has given ESCOM until 10th February to provide the compensation in form of other trees, has since told the company to give 5 seedlings on each tree it cut down.
In an interview, chairperson of the committee Welani Chilenga said “ESCOM should provide the seedlings which will be planted by parliament again.”
On his part, Chief Executive Officer for ESCOM, Allexon Chiwaya, said they cut down the trees because they were blocking the Cooperation’s electric lines.
Chiwaya then said they will deliberate on the issue with the board and respond on the directive.
