Over 2000 Mozambicans flee into Malawi

Nsanje district council says over 2000 households of Mozambican nationals have fled into Malawi seeking safety and stability due to post election protests

District commissioner for Nsanje Dominic Mwandira says following recent Mozambican constitutional council’s validation of the ruling Frelimo Party’s election victory the ongoing unrest in Mozambique has led to a surge of refugees crossing into Malawi through the district

Mwandira says the Mozambicans have fled to Traditional Authroties Mlolo, Mbenje and Tengani

He says all forced displaced Mozambican nationals are coming from Morroumbala district in Zambezia Province of Mozambique

Mwandira further says the situation remains dire as these individuals urgently require humanitarian assistance

The Nsanje District Commissioner says shelter and camp management cluster together with other clusters conducted a preliminary assessment upon receiving information on the cross border migration

As of 25th December the assessment team managed to visit Tengani Evacuation Centre and Nyamuthuthu Full Primary School where refugees are currently being situated amongst other alternative accommodation options such as staying with relatives, lodges and rest house

Nsanje district council says the displaced Mozambicans have sought refuge in various evacuation centres including Chadzuka, Mnembe CBCC and Chikoje Full Primary School

According to the council detailed verification is ongoing to truly trace the forced displaced persons and the figures may rise
