Opposition Parties worried with NRB’s conduct of Supplementary Civil Registration
Opposition political parties have expressed concern on how National Registration Bureau NRB has conducted the just ended supplementary civil registration
In their joint AFORD, DPP, PP, UDF and UTM have also voiced their disappointment with Malawi Electoral Commission for its blatant disregard for critical measures necessary for ensuring a credible election as well as their continued refusal to take on board concerns by stakeholders
Signed by secretary generals Linda Limbe, Peter Mukhitho, Willet Karonga, Generino Lemani and Ben Chakhame say the parties have observed with dismay NRB’s continued disregard for the court order in the case between George Chipwayila and others verse as Malawi Electoral Commission.
The parties say during the supplementary civil registration NRB did not register people for the entire seven days, some operated for a period of four days only while others had not registration kits for the first three days
The parties are against the registration of only people who had presented themselves at registration centres but were not issued with their unique ID number by the close of the registration phases
They also say the five day registration period is insufficient to accommodate all eligible voters particularly in rural areas with logistical and transportation challenges
The parties have condemned MEC for neglecting their input provided during interface meetings and diverting from its commitments made during the meetings.
Therefore they have asked NRB to audit national ID’s at SFFRFM and release data for individuals who registered after 21st October but have not received them
The political parties have urged Malawi Electoral Commission and NRB to address their demands and concerns without delay to ensure 2025 general elections are inclusive, transparent and credible.
