Northerners ask Government to establish Toll Gate
People in the north of Malawi have asked government to establish a toll gate in the region, introduce tax on salaries of president, vice president and ministers as well as increase and reduce some taxes among others for the economy to stabilize
This has been said in Mzuzu city during the 2025 to 2026 budget consultation meeting which is being held by ministry of finance
Some of the participants proposed making mine development agreements public so that people track their performance and benefits they bring to the communities
He suggested reducing tax on duty free week and impose huge tax on imported goods
The participant bemoaned the progress of MAREP as it is different from 10 to 20 years ago when it was introduced
Vice chancellor of Mzuzu University professor Wells Singini asked government to increase the support to students since 150 to 200 reserve their places every year due to lack of fees
On his part Moses Mkandawire said corruption is rampant hence endangering economy
Minister of finance Simplex Chithyola Banda welcomed the views provided by the participants in northern region therefore promised to include some of them in the budget statement
