Muslim Association of Malawi Condemns Ban Of Hijab In Public Schools
Muslim Association of Malawi MAM has condemned the tendency by authorities in public schools to prohibit Muslim female students from dressing Islamically within school premises.
The remarks come following increased number of Muslim learners who have been forced to take off their headscarf in public schools across the country.
In a statement MAM secretary general Alhaj Twaibu Lawe says this tendency is infringing on the right to religion, conscience, belief as well as academic freedom, which are provided for in the Malawi constitution.
Alhaj Lawe has meanwhile asked the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to take appropriate steps and ensure that no school prohibits Muslim female students from adhering to their religious prescription on dressing.
He has also urged Muslim parents to ensure that the children are following Islamic teachings on dressing.
