MCC Advises HRDC To Cancel Demonstrations
Mzuzu City Council has advised Human Rights defenders coalition HRDC not to conduct demonstrations on 19th July.
Chief executive officer of MCC Macloud Kadammanja says the date was already booked by Mzuzu University for conducting graduation ceremony for their students.
“HRDC notified the council on 15th July about the planned peaceful demonstrations slated on 19, 23, 26 and 30 July,” Kadammanja said
Last week HRDC announced that it would be holding the demonstrations every Tuesday and Friday for three weeks after chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission Justice Dr Jane Ansah did not resign.
But the demonstrations were cancelled on Tuesday 16th July because they had not notified the police hence shifting them to Friday.
HRDC had led the demonstrations to force Ansah resign after opposition political parties rejected results of presidential elections.
The main opposition Malawi Congress Party MCP and UTM party applied separately to High court against the results.
However, the cases were merged at constitutional court.
President professor Peter Mutharika who won the presidential elections appealed to the court to strike out the case.
But, the constitutional court rejected the appeal and set 29 July as the day to start hearing the case.
