Malawi’s Hunger Serious-2023 Global Hunger Index
The 2023 Global Hunger Index GHI has found that Malawi’s hunger situation is serious
This is according to statement released by a consortium of four organisations namely Concern Worldwide, CSONA, CISANET, Welt Hunger Hilfe and Malawi Government
The 2023 GHI report shows that Malawi continues to face challenges in food and nutrition security
This year Malawi is ranked 88 out of 125 countries as compared to last year’s ranking of 87
The country has a score of 21.1 and these results are consistent with integrated food security phase classification acute food insecurity analysis report which indicated that 5.2 million Malawians will face severe hunger in 2023 to 2024 lean season
The 2023 Global Hunger Index will be launched on 8th November under the theme the power of youth in shaping food systems
It explores the critical role of youth in fulfilling the right to adequate food for current and future generations
Youth interviewed in Kasiya and Mchinji called for greater youth engagement in agricultural interventions as well as market systems
Speaking at the launch Minister of youth and sports urged young people to embrace agriculture for food security
Speaking during the launch of a report on Global Food Index Uchizi Mkandawire emphasized that the youth are more energetic that can boost agricultural production
Mkandawire said young people can address the challenges of malnutrition as they have talent and skills on agribusiness
In her remarks Welt Hunger Hilfe WHH Head of Program Claudia Plock underscored that the need to empower the youths as they play critical role in economic development
