Malawians protest ACB’s hiding suspects bribing judges
Malawians are demonstrating to force director of Ant Corruption Bureau ACB Reyneck Matemba to reveal names of 2 people who tried to bribe judges presiding over presidential elections case.
Speaking in Lilongwe before marching to ACB offices to deliver a petition chairperson of Human Rights Defenders Coalition Timothy Mtambo advised the demonstrators not to attack the police officers.
Mtambo then asked the law enforcers not to throw teargas at the demonstrators and do their job professionally.
Speaking at Katoto round about in Mzuzu city chairperson of HRDC in the northern region Happy Mhango said “if ACB does not reveal the names of the suspects who attempted to bribe the judges we will come back to the streets.”
In his remarks Member of Parliament for Mzuzu city Bennex Mwamulima urged the demonstrators to protest peacefully.
At a press briefing in Lilongwe Matemba did not disclose the names of the suspects saying revealing them could jeopardize investigations.
However, he disclosed that chief justice Andrew Nyirenda had complained on 28 November 2019 that a senior public servant and an official of the private sector attempted to bribe the judges of the constitutional court who are preparing a ruling on presidential elections case.
Matemba revealed that ACB also received complaints from a civil society organisation and concerned Malawians.
