Malawians Demonstrate Against MEC Chair
Hundreds of Malawians have demonstrated to force chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission MEC Justice Dr Jane Ansah to resign.
The demonstrations which were organized by Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC took place in four cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Zomba.
Demonstrators are also pushing for the resignation of MEC commissioners citing irregularities that marred the controversial 21 May elections.
According to our reporter in Blantyre the demonstrators marched from Chichiri stadium to Queen Elizabeth central hospital roundabout but instead of turning to Civic centre offices to present a petition but they went to MEC headquarters after police failed to control them.
Our reporter says the demonstrators have damaged some billboards of state President Peter Mutharika in central business district of Blantyre.
“Prior to the demonstrations, Masauko Chipembere Highway was temporarily closed to pave way for the demonstrators to protest peacefully,” Taim Jimmy said
The demonstration in Blantyre was patronized by several politicians including Vice president of MCP Sidik Mia and UTM’s Director of youth Bon Kalindo.
Speaking during demonstrations in Lilongwe vice chairperson of HRDC Gift Trapence said “if Ansah does not resign they will organize another demonstration.”
In his remarks MCP president Dr Lazarus Chakwera who participated in the demonstrations said Malawians are angry and want everyone involved in injustice to resign.
UTM President Dr Saulos Chilima said he joined the demonstrators to protest against evil.
