Malawi President urges SADC countries to promote justice and freedom
President Lazarus Chakwera has urged Southern African countries to unite in promoting justice and freedom for its people.
Chakwera who is chairperson of Southern African Development Community SADC has said this as the organization is commemorating southern Africa liberation day.
He said the day is special as it marks the major turning point of the history of SADC which is now turning 42 years.
Chakwera applauded the contribution and sacrifices made by founders of SADC to bring about political freedom thereby laying a solid foundation for regional integration, cooperation and social economic development in the region.
However Chakwera said political freedom alone is not enough if not accompanied by sustainable socio-economic development that lifts people from poverty to prosperity.
“This is the reason whey SADC adopted Vision 2050 which aspires to peaceful, inclusive, competitive, middle-to high income industrialization region where all citizens enjoy sustainable economic well-being, justice and freedom,” Chakwera
Chakwera then urged SADC countries to join hands and re-double their efforts towards defeating the contemporary challenges that threatens their liberty, health and livelihoods.
He said the organization has begun a process of documenting the legacy of the founders of SADC which will ultimately lead to the construction of a museum housed at the SADC secretariat in Botswana
The president finally expresses gratitude to the commitment of the personnel deployed in the SADC mission in Mozambique to combat terrorism and acts of violent extremism in some districts in Cabo Delgado province.
