Malawi condemned for rejecting UN resolution to end Israeli occupation in Palestine
Palestine Solidarity movement and human rights activist have described as shameful and inhumane Malawi’s decision of voting against a resolution to end unlawful occupation of Israel in Palestinian territory.
Out of the 193 countries 124 voted overwhelmingly in favor of the resolution while 14 voted against including Malawi.
Reacting to the development Palestine Solidarity movement coordinator Asabuni Phiri and executive director for center for human rights and rehabilitation CHRR Micheal Kaiyatsa while not surprised with Malawi’s action on the issue said it portrays non-committal to international laws.
Phiri and Kaiyatsa said being the warm heart of Africa, Malawi was supposed to lead by example and vote against the war.
“The decision has been made by few individuals who are benefiting from Israel adding that no sane leader can vote for the killing of innocent people,” Phiri.
Meanwhile Phiri has expressed happiness with UN decision saying it will help to restore peace in Gaza AND West Bank.
Kaiyatsa has therefore requested Malawi government to ensure that its commitment to promoting human rights is reflected in its actions.
In July this year UN top court ruled that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories was unlawful.
The resolution also demands withdraw of all Israel forces and evacuation of settlers from occupied Palestinian territories within a year.
Meanwhile, Leader of opposition in parliament has condemned Malawi for rejecting UN resolution that Israel must end its illegal occupation of Palestinian territories
In his speech during the closure of parliament meeting Dr George Chaponda said “is very disheartening that Malawi voted no to the resolution when it knows that Israel is killing many innocent people including women and children in Gaza and West bank.”
Chaponda condemned in strongest terms Chakwera administration for siding with Israel on its genocidal war in Gaza
Chaponda is concerned that the speaker is holding a position in the ruling party MCP which was not the case in previous governments.
He asked Secretary General of MCP Richard Chimwendo Banda and Speaker of parliament Catherine Gotani Hara to ensure that the party postpones its Saturday rally
The leader of opposition criticized Chakwera administration of doing various malpractices such as dubious buying of fertilizer and failing to fulfill its promises to Malawians
He welcomed UTM members to the opposition side saying they made a right decision
But the speaker trashed Chaponda’s sentiments on her position in MCP citing other speakers before her who held party positions such as Richard Msowoya former vice president of MCP.
In his speech leader of the house Richard Chimwendo Banda stressed that MCP rally will continue at Ekwendeni while DPP holds its rally at Katoto.
On next year’s elections Chimwendo Banda said DPP will not rule this country again
He rebuked DPP for not electing female vice president, arresting former president Bakili Muluzi as well as his son Atupele and stealing UDF.
Chimwendo Banda reminded Chaponda that he once said people from the north cannot rule this country therefore DPP should not love the region now
But Chimwendo’s statement that MP for Mulanje Bale Victor Musowa failed to present a motion on national registration angered the latter who asked the speaker to give his chance to answer but to no avail hence the noise.
