Malawi Commemorates World Consumer Rights Day
Malawi has commemorated world consumer rights day in Mzuzu under the theme “consumer rights in financial services.”
Speaking at the event Executive director of Competition and Fair Trade Charlotte Malonda said the theme is relevant to Malawi because it is a reflection of what has been happening in the country.
“The theme is appropriate to Malawi since the country is experiencing a boom in financial services such as mobile money transfers, auto teller machines, mobile bill payments, point of sale transactions and online shopping,” explained Malonda.
She said in accessing these services consumers face a number of challenges such as multiple service charges, clients not receiving the money once transferred, ATMs not dispersing money but deducted from the account, transactions not taking place because of weak networks and infrastructure in rural areas.
