Karonga Chitipa Cultural Heritage Backs Mtambo

Karonga Chitipa Cultural Heritage has called upon people to stop attacking nationality of chairperson of Malawi Human Rights Defenders Coalition Timothy Mtambo.

In a press release national coordinator of the Heritage A.G Mwambila says an attack on Mtambo is an attack on people of Karonga and Chitipa.

Mwambila says they cannot be silent if one of them is being attacked for simply standing for justice.

“Mtambo is a bonafide citizen of the country, was born and grew in Chitipa, attended malawi’s education system from primary to tertially level at Chancellor, has national identification card and has worked in the country in addition to being a traditional leader in his home district,” Mwambila explains

He says it is disturbing and unfortunate for anyone to allege that Mtambo is a foreigner in Malawi.

The Heritage believes that Mtambo is being attacked due to his hard-line stance against wanton disregard of the country’s democratic tenets including respect for human rights.

It further observes that the smear campaign against Mtambo is one of the desperate attempts to muzzle critical voices as well as further shrink the civic space in the country.
