HRDC Rejects Police Demand To Suspend Demonstrations

Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC has said cannot stop the demonstrations until chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission Justice Dr Jane Ansah resigns.

Speaking at a press conference in Lilongwe HRDC chairperson Timothy Mtambo has said they have organized three major demonstrations which have never happened in the country before.

Mtambo says they are calling it a 1 million march which will be held in Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu on 6th August.

“Inspector general of police sent his letter to wrong people because he was supposed to deliver it to president Mutharika,” emphasised Mtambo

He expressed worry that former president Dr Bakili Muluzi did not come back with a response from the appointing authority within 7 days.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Defenders Coalition has condemned violence, looting and vandalism during demonstrations.

In a press statement cosigned by HRDC National coordinator Timothy Mtambo and his vice Gift Trapence have extended sympathies to all those who suffered personal injury, loss or damage to their property.

They have called upon police to arrest all culprits involved in the uncalled looting and stealing acts.
