HRDC Cancels Tuesday’s Demonstrations.
Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC has said there will be no demonstrations tomorrow as earlier announced.
Chairperson of HRDC Timothy Mtambo has said this during a press briefing in Lilongwe.
Speaking to the press Mtambo said cancellation of tomorrow’s demonstrations is due to late submission of a notice to police.
Mtambo says “the nationwide demonstrations will start on Friday to give ample time to police to prepare.”
He has asked the demonstrators to avoid violence because it can disturb economy of the country
Mtambo has emphasized that from next week onwards the demonstrations will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays.
HRDC is holding the demonstrations to force chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission Justice Dr Jane Ansah to resign for mismanaging May 21 tripartite elections which were won by President Professor Peter Mutharika of Democratic Progressive Party DPP.
The main opposition Malawi Congress Party MCP and UTM party applied to High court of Malawi against results of presidential elections.
High court referred the case to constitutional court which merged the two applications.
President Mutharika appealed to the court to strike out the elections case.
However a panel of five judges sitting as a constitutional court dismissed the appeal and hearing of the case will resume on July, 29 2019.
UTM and MCP Presidents have been endorsing and participating in the demonstrations which were violent in some of the four cities of Malawi.
The demonstrators destroyed government buildings and shops especially in the capital city Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Karonga.
