Global Fund allocates over US$512m to Malawi
Global Fund has allocated Malawi over 5 hundred and 12 million dollars for HIV, Tuberculosis, Malaria and building resilient and sustainable systems health RSSH
Division Head, Grant Management Mark Eldon Edington says Global Fund Board made the decision in November 2019 on the funding available for the 2020 to 2022 allocation period.
“HIV has been allocated 393,004,813 million dollars, Tuberculosis 19,950,196 million dollars while Malaria 99,984,069 million dollars from 1st January 2021 to 30 June 2024,” says Edington
He has requested Malawi to submit its applications for the funding which have been developed through inclusive and transparent country dialogue with a broad range of stakeholders including key and vulnerable population.
Due to high co-infection of TB and HIV Malawi is requested to submit TB/HIV as a joint funding request.
Edington adds that the allocation utilization period has been exceptionally extended from the standard 3 year period to 3 and half years.
He has encouraged Malawi to explore opportunities to streamline and consolidate implementation arrangements for the coming allocation period.
The Global Fund says “the country coordinating Mechanism CCM should assess and propose the best use of Funds and related investments in the health system.”
He further says the funding request should be aligned with prioritized country needs and guided by relevant national strategic plans and program reviews.
The Fund advises the country to invest in strengthening health and community systems as they are essential in to accelerate progress towards ending epidemics.
Edington emphasizes that removing human rights and gender related barriers in access to services is critical to ending the epidemics.
He has called for increasing domestic resources for health especially HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria and step up the fight through increased innovation and collaboration in the 11 years.
