Ex-vice President Against Mahatma Gandhi Statue

Barely few days after Malawi Government backed the idea of constructing Mahatma Gandhi Statue near Ginnery Corner Roundabout, former vice president has condemned the government saying it is unMalawian.

Speaking to Radio Islam in Blantyre, Cassim Chilumpha who is also president of Assembly for Democracy ADD said it does not make sense to honour Gandhi because Malawi has heroes and freedom fighters who have not been honoured.

Chilumpha who is currently leader of opposition political parties that are not in parliament has encouraged Malawians to petition government forcing it to rescind its decision.

“Malawians must not tolerate that statue because it is not important to Malawi,” Chilumpha said.

Government argues that Malawi is benefiting a lot from government of India hence the need to honor one of India’s sons.

Currently an online petition is circulating calling for signatures of people who are against building Mahatma Gandhi statue at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital near Ginnery corner roundabout in Blantyre.
