European Union Gives Malawi Motorcycles

European Union has handed over 220 motorcycles to Malawi for Kulima and Afikepo programs.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at Capital Hill in Lilongwe European Union ambassador to Malawi Sandra Peasan said this is the first batch of the motorcycles that have been procured to be delivered in the country.

Peasan said 450 motorcycles are expected to be brought in Malawi.

“The motorcycles should be distributed to both women and men and taken care of,” she emphasised.

In his remarks, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Joseph Mwanamveka applauded European Union for the help being rendered to his ministry.

Mwanamveka said that mobility is one of the challenges that affect his Ministry.

Afikepo and Kulima programs re being implemented in Malawi by UNICEF and FAO.

Country Director for FAO James Okoth said almost 400, 000 households will benefit from Kulima program and 66 thousand households from Afikepo program.

“The programs are implemented in 10 districts and Afike program will get 150 while Kulima 70 motorcycles,” Okoth said.

He added that the motorcycles are meant to ease mobility of extension workers.
