CDEDI tells Government to follow Fuel Purchase Procedures

Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives CDEDI has told government to follow stipulated fuel purchase procedures.

Speaking at a press briefing executive director of CDEDI, Sylvester Namiwa alleged that government lied to have procured 51 million liters of fuel through government to government fuel purchase arrangement.

Namiwa, alleges that the government is planning to transport fuel from Tanga Port in Tanzania to Nacala port in Mozambique citing logistical challenges in the northern corridor.

According to him there are some state house and reserve bank of Malawi officials who secure a fuel deal with Gulf energies which is a private company in United Arab Emirates and not UAE government as claimed by government.

He has wondered why government decided to flout procedures as the mandate to bring fuel into the country rests with Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) and National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) not politicians who only want to benefit themselves out of the deals.

Commenting on the age bill remit, Namiwa says it is disheartening to note that 1 billion kwacha was wasted to sneak the bill as a private members bill.

He was however quick to point relief after hearing from leader of the house Richard Chimwendo Banda and leader of Opposition Dr George Chaponda that the infamous and undemocratic bill will not come to parliament.
