Army worms’ outbreaks in Malawi
Ministry of agriculture, irrigation and water development says fall and African armyworm outbreaks have been reported in several districts
Secretary for the ministry Grey Nyandule Phiri says these outbreaks are facilitated by the prevailing weather conditions as most parts are experiencing several rainy days followed by sunny days.
Nyandule Phiri says this type of weather coupled with availability of green grass is very conducive to growth and development of army worms.
“Therefore the Ministry is advising all farmers to be on the look-out and be regularly inspecting fields looking for caterpillars,” he says
Farmers are urged to promptly report armyworm outbreaks or any suspected worms to the nearest agricultural office or extension workers within their communities.
In addition the Ministry encourages extension workers to be organizing the affected farmers into groups for proper pest management operations.
Grey Nyandule Phiri has asked communities and farmers to report to police if they are asked to pay for free pesticides from government.
