Malawi targets 62 million trees in 2019/2020 season

Ministry of natural resources, energy and mining has set a target of planting 62 million trees in the 2019 to 2020 national forestry season.

In a statement made available to Radio Islam, secretary for the Ministry Patrick Matanda says during the season the department of forestry will conduct various forest management practices in 88 forest reserves.

Matanda says in liason with private sector the department will protect and manage 92, 000 hectares in forest plantations.

“The youth with support from government are expected to manage 30, 000 hectares of natural regeneration on customary land throughout the country in the season,” he added

The Ministry has therefore advised the general public to start tree planting in all areas which have received adequate rains.

Matanda appeals to Malawians to take forestry activities as an integral part when implementing various development programs.

Speaking in an interview, national chairman for Wildlife Environmental Society of Malawi WESM, Dr Tiwonge Gawa, said “planting more trees will combat climate change and boost development.”

This year’s national forestry season’s theme is “Trees and forests for transformed Landscape and livelihoods”
