UTM Against Suspension Of Demonstrations
UTM party has said police demand to suspend demonstrations is a blatant disregard of peoples’ expression of their loss of trust in electoral commission chairperson justice Dr Jane Ansah.
In a statement President of UTM Dr Saulos Chilima says no state institution must be used to muzzle a very clear call of the people of this country.
Chilima says banning the exercise of fundamental rights and freedoms enshrined in the constitution can aggravate the tense situation in the country.
“Malawi Police service and Malawi defense force should allow the masses to exercise their rights and secure their lives as well as property,” he said
Chilima then said those who engage in criminal acts during demonstrations should be dealt with.
He expressed gratitude to Malawi defense force for showing remarkable professionalism, discipline and ability to contain elements of violence.
Chilima added that “rights and freedoms must be vigorously defended and protected even if some sections of society do not agree with the views expressed by those enjoying them.”
